Aigle-Martigny Worlds set to go ahead as planned
The 2020 UCI Road World Championships, scheduled to take place in September in Switzerland, are set to move forward as planned, organizers announced on Friday.
“After examining the health conditions and restrictions implemented by the Federal Council, in agreement with the International Cycling Union (UCI), the Cantons of Vaud and Valais and the communes of Aigle and Martigny, the Organizing Committee is moving ahead to finalize the organization of the event,” race organizers said in a statement.
Friday’s update comes after months of uncertainty over whether the Swiss towns of Aigle and Martigny would ultimately host Road Worlds as initially planned amid coronavirus concerns and subsequent restrictions on large events. Reports emerged in May that Worlds could be moved to the Middle East, potentially in the United Arab Emirates or Qatar, and potentially later in the calendar.
As Switzerland has begun to scale back lockdown restrictions, however, the possibility of running Worlds in Aigle and Martigny as scheduled has begun to look increasingly likely; now, it appears that things are indeed set to go ahead as planned.
“Over the last few months, we have not stopped working on the organisation of the 2020 UCI Road World Championships in Aigle-Martigny,” said organizing committee co-presidents Grégory Devaud and Alexandre Debons in a statement. “Today, we are continuing to prepare for our event. We are very grateful for the trust from the International Cycling Union (UCI), local authorities, our sponsors, the huge number of volunteers that have registered and are very pleased about our cycling fans passion for our race and its exceptional circuit.
“We need to remain cautious in view of the world health situation but the organization of the Swiss Road Championships on 22 August 2020 on our circuit is a strong sign that will validate our approach and help us fine-tune our procedures.”
