We kick off the week with a new Everesting record and a big transfer, among other news items.
Just one week after Katie Hall nabbed the women’s Everesting record, Lauren De Crescenzo went four minutes faster to set a new record as the first woman to Everest in under 10 hours.
Across the Atlantic, Lorena Wiebes has signed a lengthy contract to join Sunweb. The top-ranked women’s rider in the world in 2019, Wiebes emerged as a rising star with Parkhotel Valkenburg but her relationship with the squad soured last year. After a legal dispute, she agreed to stay with the team for part of the 2020 season, but with that period in the rearview mirror now, she is taking her talents to Sunweb.

| De Crescenzo Everests in under 10 hours to break women’s record
Lauren De Crescenzo has broken the women’s Everesting record set just one week ago by fellow American Katie Hall. De Crescenzo became the first woman to go under the 10-hour mark, registering a time of 9:57:29 with 24 trips up the Hog Pen Gap climb in Georgia.
De Crescenzo made her successful Everesting attempt in an effort raise money for Craig Hospital and Grady Hospital. She spent five weeks at Craig following a crash during the 2016 San Dimas Stage Race that left her with serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury.
Nevertheless, De Crescenzo worked her way back over time, and has since won the Crusher in the Tushar gravel race and a national collegiate time trial title (as well as completing a graduate degree)—and now she is the women’s Everesting record holder.
| Wiebes signs with Sunweb
Lorena Wiebes, the top-ranked rider in the women’s peloton last year, has signed a lengthy contract to join the Sunweb team.
The 21-year-old Dutchwoman emerged as a rising star with Parkhotel Valkenburg but by late last year there were reports that she was looking to leave the squad. After a legal dispute, rider and team came to an agreement that she would stick with Parkhotel Valkenburg through the end of May. As of Monday, she now rides for Sunweb, and is set to ride with the team through the 2024 season.
| Dumoulin: ‘Difficult to bear the pressure’ at Sunweb
Speaking of Sunweb, former Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin has talked about his time at the team in story posted on the website of his new team, Jumbo-Visma. Dumoulin noted that he was looking forward to working with other Grand Tour stars (like Primoz Roglic and Steven Kruijswijk) after spending years as the clearcut leader at Sunweb.
“At Sunweb I was the absolute leader of the team in many races. The whole team was working for me,” Dumoulin said.
“And now at Team Jumbo-Visma and certainly in the upcoming Tour de France, if the race will be held, we will start with three leaders. That is something that I like very much. And I was looking for that too. At Sunweb it was very difficult to bear the pressure of an entire team that was only working for me. So I really like this new situation.”
| Former Flanders winner Decock dies at 93
Roger Decock, a regular Classics contender in the 1950s, passed away on Sunday at the age of 93.
Among the Belgian’s major career highlights were wins at Paris-Nice in 1951 and the Tour of Flanders in 1952.
| Gravel Worlds cancelled for 2020
Gravel Worlds, which was set to take place in Lincoln, Nebraska, on August 22, has been cancelled.
Organizers have announced that registrants “will be receiving an email soon with deferral or refund options.”
