41 races in 4 months: The men’s and women’s WorldTour calendars, unveiled

After weeks of discussions with stakeholders across the cycling world, UCI has unveiled the reshuffled men’s and women’s WorldTour calendars for 2020.

With the majority of this season’s top-tier bike races postponed due to coronavirus concerns, both calendars have condensed what are usually some 10 full months of racing into less than four months, starting on August 1 with Strade Bianche.

As recent media reports relying on leaked information had reported, the official calendar does include significant overlap between races, particularly on the men’s side. The Giro d’Italia is now set to run from October 3 to 25, while the Vuelta a España will run from October 20 to November 8.

In the meantime, both Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Flanders are set to take place during the Giro, Paris-Roubaix will coincide with stages of both the Giro and the Vuelta, and Il Lombardia will be held during the Vuelta as well.

The Giro Rosa, now planned to run from September 11 to 19, will not overlap with any other women’s races.

The calendar as presented does preserve a significant number of races beyond the biggest events. The new men’s calendar features 23 races and the women’s calendar features 18, meaning the only a handful of events have been fully cancelled for now.

Particularly of note in the newly reshuffled women’s calendar is the surprise inclusion of a women’s Paris-Roubaix, set to take place on the same day as the men’s race, October 25.
