2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards: The judges' shortlists

The 2021 Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards closed a few days ago.

We received hundreds of incredible submissions from around the world – truly some of the best cycling stories and images from what was another incredibly difficult year for many as the coronavirus pandemic continued.

The Awards are a showcase for the talented entrant photographers, but they have another important purpose – raising money for cancer research for Tour de Cure and the Young Cyclist Assistance grant.

Now that entries are closed, it’s over to our panel of judges — Jojo Harper, Brazo de Hierro, and James Startt — to decide who’s going to be awarded the Mark Gunter Photographer of the Year Awards.

Each of the judges have gone through the difficult task of shortlisting their top 10 images from each of the categories (Professional and Amateur). To eliminate any possibility of bias, they’re not able to see the name of each photographer.

The judges will bring these shortlists to a judging call early this week, where over several hours, they’ll deliberate on the top three in each category. Final winners will be announced soon after.

Jojo Harper’s Shortlist

Jojo Harper joins the Awards as a judge in 2021. Her work has been featured in the Awards since 2018. Jojo is from the south of England and like many, she lives the cycling life in Girona, Spain.

Jojo started her cycling photography career by photographing her brother racing, who was then with Rapha Condor JLT. She “loves her photos to tell a story.”

“The photo was taken in the bath and it is meant to represent Lotta just keeping her head above water. I had heard about the mental health stories in her life and how coming back to the world of cycling was a big deal for her. It was taken at the Ceratizit training camp. Krystal’s warmth and enthusiasm are palpable, even at seven in the morning, days after a big race, on a Monday no less. “The idea was to create the movement of a cyclist in the studio for the campaign of Vallier kit. I have to say, it’s was one of my favorite projects to develop. A lot of technics behind that. For the geeks, these blurry images were shot at a shutter speed of 1sec with 4 strobes. This is one shot with only colors and contrast editing. “The final night of Fifth Street Cross in Emmaus, PA had epic rain and a 25-degree temp shift occurred during the race. The race is at night and I thought I could capture the riders as they pass by the scoring tent. “Weird to say, but this shot of Elisa Longo Borghini is far more powerful than the one I took of the winner Lizzie. Elisa is riding for third place of the very first Paris Roubaix Femmes ever. Look the way she smiles, because she is 3rd, but mostly because Lizzie won the race the crazy way. Forgetting about the physical pain. Look at the Trek’s staff being totally nuts about the situation. Brazo de Hierro

Brazo de Hierro is an experienced and recognized Spanish photographer, capturing the essence of what cycling means to him.

In 2020, he showed the world of cycling through lockdown, from behind the lens, like no other. Brazo has entered the Awards every year since the beginning of 2016 and his photographs have been featured many times.

“While waiting to cross the racecourse during the USA CX Nationals Single Speed race I decided to crouch down and grab a few frames just as this rider came flying up Mt. Abus shaking what appears to be a recently acquired can of beer. “The west bank has always been in the center of political disputes and still is, many of which escalated to violent conflicts. As a result, over the years many infrastructure projects initiated by both sides were left to decay before completion. James Startt

James Startt is now in his fourth decade as a cycling photographer — he’s photographed every Tour de France since 1990.

The winner of a Gold Medal in the 2021 World Sports Photography Awards, he works regularly with Peloton Magazine, Velonews, and Agence Zoom in France. He has also authored numerous books.
