Cervélo TestTeam’s Norwegian ‘God of Thunder’ Thor Hushovd claimed Norway’s first ever men’s elite title at the world road race cycling championships in Geelong today.

Hushovd, the Norwegian champion, dominated a bunch sprint at the end of a thrilling 267.2 km race, beating Denmark’s Matti  Breschel and Australia’s Allan Davis in an uphill sprint.

Hushovd, a one-day classics specialist who is known for his ability to climb and finish well on uphill sprints, waited until the final 100 metres of the 750-metre home straight before unleashing his powerful sprint.

That there was even a sprint was in doubt all day, with a 39-rider group of stars like Vincenzo Nibali, Cadel Evans, and race favorites Philippe Gilbert, Filippo Pozzato and others up the road all day.

“It’s hard to understand I’ve won the worlds. It’s a dream, it’s unreal,” said Hushovd to Sydney Morning Herald,  “Now I will just enjoy this, try to enjoy every day … just look at the jersey because I had this chance and maybe it won’t happen again.”
