Dan Martin, Garmin-Sharp, was reaping the aero and lightweight benefits of his favorite Castelli products, the Inferno Bibshorts and Climbers Jersey , when he attacked from a late escape and dropped Joaquim Rodríguez, Katusha, 400 meters from the finish.

Martin becomes the second Irishman to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège since Sean Kelly in 1984.

“I didn’t want to wait for the sprint and that is why I went at that point,” Martin said. It was a team victory for Garmin-Sharp after Ryder Hesjedal had set a high pace to keep the breakaway group of six out of sight of the chasing group.

At 26, this was the biggest victory of Martin’s career, who also won the Tour of Catalonia and finished fourth in last Wednesday’s Flèche Wallonne.
