Two Moab Residents Found Dead at Campsite in La Sal Mountains; Details Pending
Relative steps in to identify the two bodies found near Moab as local officials begin an investigation.
Crystal Beck and Kylen Schulte, a married couple from Moab, have been found dead in the South Mesa area of the La Sal Loop Road in Grand County. Local officials have not yet determined a cause of death.
On Wednesday, August 18, Grand County Sheriff’s Lt. Shan Hackwell announced the incident without identifying the deceased. Later, family members identified the bodies, also citing that they’d been missing since August 14.
Schulte’s aunt, Bridget Calvert, said the two were last seen leaving Woody’s, a local bar. Calvert told the Moab Times-Independent that neither went to work in the following days.
The troubling circumstances prompted the family to initiate its own search.

The Grand County Sherriff’s Office told local press that it transported the bodies for examination on Wednesday. At the time of writing, it still hadn’t issued any updates on the investigation’s progress.
At 9:53 a.m. today, the department made the following comment on Facebook:
“At this time, there is not believed to be a threat to the public in this area. As always, please recreate responsibly and safely.”
Beck and Schulte were reportedly known to camp in the mountains often. Anyone with information relevant to the case is encouraged to contact the Grand County Sherriff’s Office (contact info on the home page).
