Timex Tackles Ocean Plastic With ‘Waterbury Ocean’ Watch Collection
Timex introduces the Waterbury Ocean watch in a joint effort to celebrate World Ocean Day and help reduce ocean plastics.
Today is World Ocean Day, and Timex is celebrating with a new watch. Display your World Ocean Day support with the Timex Waterbury Ocean, a timepiece built largely from plastic bound for the sea.
The Timex Waterbury Ocean marks a special-edition release with a mission to “unite ocean action.”
The timekeeper uses Swiss-made #tide ocean material for the case, bracelet, and dial.
#tide makes moldable raw material by upcycling coastal, ocean-bound waste, and Timex uses it in the Waterbury Ocean’s plastic construction.
Why Do We Celebrate World Ocean Day?
World Ocean Day is the name of a nonprofit working toward collaborative conservation, leading with its worldwide network of youth and organizational leaders.
It operates in over 140 countries to promote ocean-friendly community engagement. Its most notable contribution so far has been to compel the United Nations to internationally recognize World Ocean Day, starting in 2008 on June 8.
According to the U.N., “The purpose of the [holiday] is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.”
Timex ‘Waterbury Ocean’ Watch
The Waterbury Ocean ($99) gets a simplistic face with Timex’s signature gloss-finished pips against a gently mottled dial.
“From waste to wrist,” Timex says, it comes in two sizes and five colors. The watch’s luminant hand markers and 30m water resistance complete its maritime utility.
A 42mm variant comes in gray and dark blue; a 37mm entry comes in gray, powder blue, or pale pink.
To make the watch, #tide and Timex work with fishermen to collect plastic from the coastlines. It is then sorted, cleaned, shredded, and recrafted in a Swiss facility using carbon-neutral transport and solar power. After that, the ocean-bound refuse can be upcycled.
According to Timex, not only does the Waterbury Ocean collection help prevent ocean waste, but it also reduces fossil fuel consumption and creates employment for local communities, specifically fishermen.
