The Unknown ‘Mountain State’: A Peek Inside Nevada’s Wild Backcountry Skiing

“I think when most people think of Nevada, they think of barren desert and Las Vegas. But as a backcountry skier, the potential’s endless.”

Professional skier Josh Daiek is enthralled with the Silver State — especially in winter. And in Salomon TV’s new film “Mountain State,” you’ll discover why. You might even feel the same pull that draws Daiek to ski those seldom-explored slopes for yourself.

“What really draws me into Nevada is the unknown,” Daiek stated with excitement.

The film set forth to seek out challenging lines, untouched descents, and total solitude out in the middle of nowhere, Nevada. In ‘Mountain State’ you’ll see Josk Diaek, and his partners Trevor Semmons, Mike Cullen, and Connery Lundin touring among mountains they have all to themselves.

It wasn’t all champagne powder and empty backcountry routes, though. Over the 2 years they spent making this film, Daiek and his crew faced severe weather, near-death encounters, and other mishaps in “Mountain State” that almost resulted in an entirely different outcome.

But after the crew’s persistence and stubbornness and a bit of weather luck, the “Mountain State” project is finally here to show us the pure magic and allure of skiing in Nevada.

And it’s a glorious thing to behold.
