The All-New 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Gets Electrified

In 2021, we got the Grand Cherokee L, the three-row version of the fifth-generation Grand Cherokee. For 2022, Jeep today unveiled the fully updated two-row version and debuted the 4xe plug-in hybrid electric version.

Jeep made the big announcement as I was reviewing the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Overland. This version had 295 horsepower, a V6 mild-hybrid engine, proper two-speed 4WD, and air suspension.

The review vehicle had pretty much every option besides the V8 Hemi engine and the nicer leather featured on the top-of-the-line Summit trim level. First drive impressions? It’s a big comfortable, capable, technology-packed SUV ready for adventure.

While the full lineup of new Grand Cherokees is interesting, here we’re diving into the Grand Cherokee 4xe. This electrified full-size SUV comes to us following the runaway sales success of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe.

These plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) are the stepping stone toward Jeep’s commitment to providing a fully electrified SUV across every segment by 2025.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe driver can tailor its hybrid powertrain to suit each trip, from daily commuting in pure-electric mode to extended highway road trips with no range anxiety, allowing owners to explore nature off-road in near silence,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep brand CEO.

“This is another important step toward achieving our global vision of Zero Emission Freedom. By 2025, we plan to offer a fully electric Jeep vehicle in every SUV segment.”

Nearly 6 million Jeep Grand Cherokees have sold globally since its debut in 1992. While the 2021 Grand Cherokee L ushered in the fifth generation of Jeep’s full-size SUV, the 2022 Grand Cherokee will usher in the age of electrification in the segment.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4×4 capability, and electrification,” Meunier said.

“With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4×4 capability, and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious, and 4×4-capable Grand Cherokee ever.”

The top-of-the-line 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve interior features standard 10-inch display screens, quilted Palermo leather, open-pore Waxed Walnut wood accents, LED ambient lighting, driver and front passenger seat massage, and personalized climate zones.

Powering the plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee are two electric motors, a 400V 17kWh battery pack, and a 2.0L turbo inline four-cylinder backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

This combination serves up 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Most impressively, it’s also targeted to offer 440 miles of range, 25 miles of all-electric range, and 56 MPGe combined.

Trim levels in the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe lineup include Limited, Overland, Trailhawk, and Summit. Through these trim levels are a variety of wheel options ranging from 18 to 22 inches. The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe also offers up to 6,000 pounds of towing capacity.

More than 110 safety and security features are also available. These include impressive options like a night-vision camera and a 360-degree camera system.

This latest Grand Cherokee levels up considerably on comfort and luxury. Highlights include options like a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system, a front passenger video screen, and a new Jeep app with remote start and unlock/lock features.

Heated and cooled massage seats are also available, which I greatly appreciate in my current review Grand Cherokee L.

All 4xe Grand Cherokees get a version of the Quadratrac II two-speed 4WD system that offers low range. The battery and control modules are mounted under the floor and protected by a series of skid plates. All of this means that the PHEV Grand Cherokee is ready for real off-road adventures. It even has 24 inches of water fording ability.

While the standard 4xe Grand Cherokee has plenty of off-road capability, the Trailhawk version takes it up a notch. The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk is the only full-size SUV to offer a swaybar disconnect. This allows for much great front suspension articulation, keeping the tires on the ground for traction and stability.

To prove the Grand Cherokee 4xe’s capabilities off road, Jeep conquered the Rubicon Trail under all-electric power with the vehicle, earning its “Trail Rated” badge.

Highlights for the 2022 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe include:

  • Quadra-Drive II 4×4 system with 2-speed transfer case and 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio
  • Rear electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD)
  • Selec-Terrain traction management system
  • Selec-Speed Control
  • 10.9″ of ground clearance
  • 47.4:1 crawl ratio
  • Blue-accented 18″ wheels with all-terrain tires
  • Glare-proof, black-and-blue matte “Trailhawk” hood decal
