Ski Touring, Ultralight-Style: Hyperlite Mountain Gear Creates Its First Ski Pack
Hyperlite Mountain Gear brings Dyneema Composite Fabric and clean design to the world of multiday backcountry ski packs in its Headwall 55.
The ultralight world knows Maine-based Hyperlite Mountain Gear for its high-end packs made of Dyneema Composite Fabric (DCF). Hyperlite’s new product, the Headwall 55, showcases DCF and the brand’s familiar simplistic design in a 55L backcountry pack aimed at snowsports. And design input came from big-mountain ski legend Cody Townsend.
On top of the new pack’s 55 L of internal volume, it can hold 7.1 L of external volume. According to Hyperlite, the Headwall 55 can carry loads up to 40 pounds, aided by the brand’s signature removable dual-density hip belt and contoured aluminum stays. The total pack weight is 2.6 pounds.
Hyperlight designed the Headwall 55 to support up to 5 days of use. Seam-sealed 150-denier DCF anchors the construction. Stronger, fully woven Dyneema fabric reinforces it in strategic locations likely to see lots of abrasion.
The avalanche pocket measures 21 x 11 inches and closes with hook-and-loop strips, plus a secondary over-the-top Y-strap. It uses a hybrid solid panel/mesh design and also contains an internal sleeve for organizational purposes.
The Headwall 55 pack is finished with a sternum strap-mounted safety whistle and an integrated quarter-inch foam back panel.
Daisy chains, buckles, loops, bungees, and compression straps abound, and the pack is compatible with most of Hyperlite’s accessories (like shoulder pockets, stuff sacks, and other removable hip belts).
The Hyperlite Mountain Gear Headwall 55 runs $449 MSRP and is available now.
