Salsa Cycles, Whisky Parts Recall Carbon Handlebars

On Thursday, the parent company of Salsa and Whisky announced a recall of four models of a carbon drop bar. Two of the bars came as part of six complete builds by Salsa.

In cooperation with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Salsa Cycles’ and Whisky Parts’ parent company has recalled select handlebars.

Salsa Cowbell Carbon, Cowchipper Carbon handlebars, and Whisky No. 9 12F and No. 9 24F bars are affected. According to Quality Bicycle Products (QBP), the bars can crack where the brake/shift levers mount to them, posing a crash and injury hazard.

QBP also issued the Salsa recall in conjunction with Health Canada.

All four handlebars delivered to retailers from January 2018 through August 2022 are subject to recall. Some came as part of complete builds, including Salsa Warroad endurance road, Cutthroat gravel, and Warbird mixed-surface bikes.

The recall affects about 8,740 units in the U.S. and about 350 in Canada, per the CPSC. According to the CPSC, the handlebars sold for about $240, and the complete bicycles sold for between $4,700 and $7,000.

QBP has received 37 reports of the handlebars cracking or fracturing while in use — but no injury reports, the CPSC stated.

To identify a Cowbell, Cowchipper, No. 9 12F, or No. 9 24F handlebar, find the model name on the forward-facing area next to the stem clamp.

QBP urged anyone who has an affected bar to immediately stop riding and bring their handlebar or bike to a dealer for either Salsa or Whisky for free installation of a replacement carbon bar or an alternative aluminum bar.
