‘Reimagined’ VW ID. Buzz Electric Microbus to Unveil at SXSW

Back in January, Volkswagen confirmed that a resurrected version of the beloved VW Microbus would surface on March 9. Now, the company announces its official public debut at Austin’s South by Southwest (SXSW).

Want to lay eyes on the 21st-century progeny of the legendary Volkswagen hippie van? Then book your tickets to Austin, Texas, where the VW ID. Buzz will be on display throughout the SXSW music and technology festival.

From March 11 to 20, the reimagined, all-electric van will make so-called “Buzz Stops” throughout the city. The appearances help kick off a 3-year sponsorship agreement between Volkswagen and SXSW.

“SXSW brings the world’s creative professionals together and we’re thrilled to welcome Volkswagen to our event over the next three years,” said Roland Swenson, co-founder and CEO of SXSW.

“We’re particularly excited to have the opportunity to highlight their dedication to ingenuity in the fast-moving field of EV in the form of the iconic VW bus. We look forward to sharing the full Volkswagen experience with our attendees in Austin next month.”

Those attendees will get the first live look at the new bus, which has generated social media buzz since its announcement.

Barring any information leaks between now and March 11, onlookers will get a glimpse of a vehicle that’s still pretty much a mystery. Volkswagen has released few specific details, beyond confirming that the ID. Buzz will riff on previous concepts’ “skateboard”-style architecture. A space under the floor will house the batteries and motors. In turn, the cabin is largely a blank canvas from bumper to bumper.

VW calls the platform the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB). According to the brand, it aims to offer maximum cargo room on a minimal footprint. Scott Keogh, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, said the new design and SXSW partnership build on the Microbus’ legacy of cultural relevance and innovative utility.

“The VW Microbus has been emblematic of cultural ideals that have inspired change and driven progress, both in the U.S. and globally,” said Keogh.

“South by Southwest’s commitment to innovation and technology, coupled with its access to culture and creativity makes it the perfect venue for the ID. Buzz to make its first-ever public appearance. We’re excited to bring the ID. Buzz to Austin and showcase the innovation packed into this newest member of our EV lineup.”
