It’s National Dog Day: Say Hello to This Ski Resort’s Youngest Avalanche Dog

You can thank the ski staff at Arapahoe Basin for this daily dose of dog cuteness.

It’s National Dog Day! Go hug your pup (or a friend’s), and then be sure to celebrate with this video. The ski safety and rescue team at Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin has a new team member: meet Penny.

Penny is a golden retriever, and judging by her youthful puppy looks, maybe only 3-4 months old. However, she’s already in school for avalanche training!

Ski patrol teams frequently use avalanche dogs — trained working dogs — to assist with avalanche rescues and backcountry safety searches. A Basin’s dogs (and hopefully, Penny later) are certified through the Colorado Rapid Avalanche Deployment center. As of 2019, A Basin had five dogs on staff.
