‘Invisible Fit’: Danner Trail 2650 Campo GTX Goes Waterproof Without Bulking Up

The Danner Trail 2650 Campo GTX Invisible Fit is the next step in breathable, waterproof hiking sneakers that doesn’t add bloat to its namesake’s design.

In time for fall, the Danner Trail 2650 Campo offers protection from the elements from a membrane bonded to the upper to allow a closer fit and more flexibility. It’s a year-round hiker that works to keep feet dry while providing protection and traction for miles.

While Danner continues to adjust the ingredients in its shoes, the big difference-maker here is the addition of a GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane. Placed within the upper, the new membrane is designed to fit just like the nonwaterproof version.

By blocking water, wind, as well as some debris, this new breathable and flexible upper adds more versatility to one of the brand’s most popular sneaker hikers.

Danner’s well-received line of sneaker-hikers adds a new waterproof model just in time for fall. We reviewed and compared several of Danner’s 2650 models earlier this year and praised the durability and versatility of the line.

Danner designed the Trail 2650 Campo shoes to be light and airy in hot-weather terrain like the Pacific Crest Trail — for which its name was born. Now, the new Trail 2650 Campo GTX goes waterproof with a new membrane from GORE-TEX and a few new hiking-minded additions.

We tapped Gabe Phillips, a senior product designer at Danner, who told us the new Campo GTX now “includes connection points for dust gaiters, high-abrasion mesh in the vamp for increased breathability, better water evacuation, and a fixed stretchable tongue to help keep debris out and still pull on quickly.”

New Waterproof Membrane

The star ingredient of this shoe is the new GORE-TEX Invisible Fit construction. Invisible Fit boasts a waterproof, windproof, and ultrabreathable performance as a sock-like bootie inside the Trail Campo GTX shoes.

Phillips explained that the goal was to make these fit as well as the Campo, which meant overcoming the typical bloat of a waterproof bootie inside. This new membrane made that possible and also allowed more breathability, he said.

“The fit may be a little tighter because of this and the shoe or boot can feel warmer overall. With the Invisible Fit construction, the waterproof membrane is spot laminated directly to the rest of the upper which means the fit is the same as a non-waterproof version,” he noted. “Additionally, there are fewer seams with this construction which increases the longevity of the membrane.”

And because there is less material in use, the new GTX shoes are only 2 ounces heavier (per pair) than the dry-season predecessor.

Campo GTX Features

  • GORE-TEX Invisible Fit membrane
  • Quick-dry, wicking, breathable mesh
  • Sock-like, bootie construction
  • Trailguard TPU shank for underfoot protection
  • Vibram 460 outsole with Megagrip

The trail-running shape carries over from the Campo with room in the forefoot for stability and natural foot movement.

Continuing from the Trail 2650 line is the EXO Heel System for stability. The Vibram 460 outsole with lugs that adapt to conditions also has Megagrip for traction on rocky ground or wet wood.

The uppers combine leather with abrasion-resistant textile panels to lighten the load and allow breathability without compromising the shoes’ durability.

The new dust gaiter compatibility means you can rock low-tops and worry less about interrupting your adventure to dump rocks or grit.
