Hitting His Stride: Ben True Tackles NYC in Marathon Debut

Following the birth of his son and a heartbreaking miss in the 10,000m at the Olympic Trials in 2021, this track and field star was ready for a new challenge.

Although decorated runner Ben True dedicated his career to track and cross country, his fiercely competitive nature recently compelled him to run farther.

After reflecting on near misses at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic Trials, he placed fourth in the 10,000m in June 2021. True was ready for a hard reset and a new format.

“My career has been a lot of almost,” he said. “But I was never able to really accomplish the goals that I really wanted to accomplish.”

So True, now 35 and a newly minted father, set his sights on the 2021 NYC Marathon for his marathon debut.

This short and sweet film by Wahoo chronicles the buildup to True’s 26.2-mile entrance into the race format with the support of his triathlete wife, Sarah True, and running buddies. On Nov. 7, 2021, True clocked a time of 2:12:53 to finish seventh overall at the 50th running of the NYC Marathon.
