‘Hermanas’ Celebrates Mariachi-Playing, Mold-Breaking, Cycling Sisters
‘Hermanas’ shares the story of Gemma and Ale Casillas, two sisters who share a love for cycling, mountains, music, and more.
Sisters Gemma and Ale ride bikes together — specifically, gravel and road routes around their home in southern California. In a heavily white male-dominated sport like cycling, just showing up as a woman of color can be an act toward driving change.
“It’s important for us to have a place and a say in this [sport],” says Gemma Casillas. In this short film, the Casillas sisters dive into what’s so great about the sport of cycling.
The sisters’ passion for cycling comes out in everything they do as they cruise down curving, mountain roads, fix a chain, and motivate each other to get better at their sport.
“My sister Ale is very committed,” says Gemma Casillas. “She pushes me on the bike; I push her on everything else!”
GLAAD Award-winning director Lauren E. Zubia Calsada directed this film, and women’s cycling brand Machines for Freedom produced it.
