Go Fast, Risk Every Thang: Ken Block’s Insane ’22 Rally Season
In rally, you can win big or you can end up in a tree. Ken Block’s 2022 season saw plenty of both, and here’s the video showing you the whole thing.
Ken Block had a hell of a year in 2022. Racing to challenge for the American Rally Association title, he saw incredible highs and bone-crunching crashes. Now his team has put together a documentary showing how the title played out and how both Block and the Hoonigan Racing team managed the challenges they faced in 2022.
Block’s season started with a unique rally ride for the U.S. — a Hyundai i20 developed for the World Rally Championship. The car has more than 140 podiums worldwide, and Block is the first (and only) driver to enter it in the American Rally Association series.
Block talks about why he picked the Hyundai and why he made the very late decision to move over from Subaru for the 2022 season.
Last-Minute Car Set the Season’s Tone
With global shipping challenges, things went downhill from there and resulted in the team showing up for early testing without a car. At the Hundred Acre Wood test event, the car didn’t show up until the night before.
Block needed to learn and test the car, knowing that he had to race it just a few days later. And that spare parts were somewhere in transit, in a container.
He crashed it.
That was a recurring theme during the season. “Go fast, risk everything” works very well when it goes well, but is incredibly punishing when things go wrong.
We won’t spoil the season or the documentary. But if you’re a rally fan, this is a much-watch — a look at the trials of the season and the responsibility and humility of the driver and team owner.
