Gerber Builds Customizable ‘Center-Drive’ Multitool for First Time

Gerber adds its bestselling Center-Drive multitool to its custom program. Now, you can design a one-of-a-kind multitool unique to your needs and style.

Multitools are one of the niftiest and most functional pieces of gear out there. People take them mountain biking for quick on-trail maintenance. Others take them camping to use knives, scissors, or bottle openers around the fire. They’re useful on the ski slopes. They’re helpful in auto-garages, handy on construction sites, and perfect for hunting or fishing trips.

When you think of multitools, one of the first brands that should come to mind is Gerber. The Portland, Oregon-based company has been slinging fine tools and knives since 1939 and came out with multitools shortly after Leatherman pioneered the category in 1983.

In 2017, Gerber introduced the Center-Drive multitool, and it quickly became one of its bestselling models. This wasn’t just because of the number of tools it included (14 different functions!) or because of the diversity of those tools, but because all of them were full-sized and fully functional — not unlike the tools in your garage.

Well, now Gerber has taken the Center-Drive a step further by adding it to the Gerber Custom Program. And now, customers can customize their Gerber Center-Drive multitool, selecting the unique functions it will include, the color, and even the laser-etched embossments.

The addition of the Center-Drive to the Custom Program brings the total number of Gerber models you can customize to 10.

One of the customizable models is a tactical pen (the Impromptu), and eight of them are knives (the Sedulo, Fastball, Savvy, Terracraft, Strongarm, Principle, Sharkbelly, and US1). And now, the Center-Drive is the first multitool in the lineup.

You can choose from two different Tool Packs. The first includes scissors, the second includes a blade, and both have a file, an awl, and a pry tool. Both also come in black oxide or satin finishes. Then, choose the color of your jaws and whether you want a leather or nylon sheath. Finally, select from nine different color combos for the body of your Center-Drive.

The laser engraving is where the rubber really meets the customizable road, though. Select one of 31 different patterns (including camo options, geometric designs, animal prints, and nature patterns), or upload your own image, or lettering you want laser engraved on the body.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, Gerber also included preset custom designs you can select or tweak to make your own. Then, when you’re happy with your unique design, either save and share it with a loved one (to add to your holiday gift list) or simply buy it.

The pricing starts at $155 with an additional $10 customization fee — which includes the sheath and an interchangeable bit set for the tool’s center-axis screwdriver.
