‘Fleeting Time’: Snowboarder & Director Ben Ferguson Debuts First Film

With a long list of snowboarding legends on board, Red Bull and Ferguson aim to deliver ‘an action-packed snowboard movie for our times.’

After a lifetime in front of the camera, Ben Ferguson steps behind it for a new snowboarding film produced by Red Bull.

The Olympic athlete makes his directorial debut on Oct. 1 with a world premiere of “Fleeting Time.” A North American tour promoting the movie fittingly begins in Ferguson’s hometown of Bend, Ore.

Judging by the trailer, Ferguson will make plenty of on-camera appearances defying gravity above a snowy backdrop. But “Fleeting Time” also features the likes of Travis Rice, Hailey Langland, and Red Gerard.

Red Bull will bring the film to seven more cities across the U.S. in October after the premiere in Bend. If you can’t make it to a tour date, “Fleeting Time” gets an exclusive digital release on Red Bull TV from Nov. 3 to 9.

“The goal is to inspire younger generations and inspire people to go snowboard,” Ferguson said of the film. “We also want to tie it back into those older snowboard films. You want it to live up to those standards that were set from the older generation.”

2 Years in the Making

Rather than the single-expedition stories of many recent outdoor films, “Fleeting Time” appears more interested in offering a bird’s-eye view of the sport.

Ferguson spent 2 years making the film with a close group of friends, driven by the idea of making a movie that motivates more people to grab a snowboard.

The list of both locations — and athletes — suggests that the filmmakers aimed for an ensemble blockbuster. (Not to mention the “playlist-worthy soundtrack” curated by Ferguson himself.)

Ferguson and crew traveled to iconic mountains around the world. That includes Alaskan peaks, deep snowpack in the Rockies, and a “revolutionary” indoor halfpipe in Japan. Its cast of snowboarders includes the brightest stars of the sport, including Ferguson’s brother Gabe Ferguson.

Other big names include Mark McMorris, Danny Davis, Zoi Sadowski-Synnott, Mikkel Bang, and Brock Crouch. Japanese halfpipe pros Kaishu Hirano and Raibu Katayama also make the roster. Still not convinced? There’s also Mikey Ciccarelli, Luke Winkelman, Jared Elston, Curtis Ciszek, and Austin Smith.

“I’m very excited to show Fleeting Time to everyone,” Ferguson said. “After the past two years the crew and I have a movie we are proud to share with snowboarders and the rest of the world. The film is an homage to the movies I grew up watching as a kid — fast paced snowboarding and heavy hitting music to match. I hope our movie makes you want to snowboard.”
