Explore More Than 25 Waterfalls on WV’s First Statewide ‘Waterfall Trail’

A new trail system links 29 waterfalls in the Mountain State. It also includes a passport program that encourages visitors to check in and win prizes.

We all know the song you want to sing right now. But instead of telling you not to, we say belt it out! Especially if you’re in or around West Virginia or can plan a trip there this summer via country roads, mountain mama.

The state that bears the motto “Mountaineers are Always Free” recently launched the first-ever statewide Waterfall Trail. This new trail system links 29 of its over 200 waterfalls into one navigable route.

Why West Virginia Waterfalls?

“We invite all travelers to put the West Virginia Waterfall Trail on their must-see list this summer and beyond,” said West Virginia Tourism Secretary Chelsea Ruby. “Whether you reconnect with your favorite falls or find hidden gems, we want to reward your explorations with exclusive prizes that leave you eager to visit Almost Heaven again.”

The new trail system features notable favorites, such as Sandstone Falls and Blackwater Falls (the 60-footer pictured at the top of this article). However, it also includes more remote offerings like Drawdy Falls in Boone County. With the trail, you can explore it and other West Virginia waterfalls via foot or motorized transport.

Waterfall Trail Tumbles Through Newest US National Park

The New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is America’s 63rd and newest national park. It’s also home to six waterfalls in West Virginia’s new trail system, including Turkey Creek Falls and Glade Creek Falls.

With so many waterfalls to explore and gaze upon, the West Virginia Department of Tourism created a Waterfall Trail Passport program. Visitors and hikers alike can check in at each location and earn a stamp on their digital passport.

Each user can then turn their stamps into prizes — 20 or more stamps will earn you a “Waterfall Wanderer” T-shirt.
