‘Connecting Walls’: 2 Climbers Find Pristine Cliffs & Grace on Yukishima

A new film from Patagonia follows two Japanese climbers as they explore and develop routes on a little-known island.

Yukishima is a small island off of Japan’s south coast. Like many remote places, its community is small but fiercely protective.

So when non-islanders Katsutaka “Jumbo” Yokoyama and Keita Kurakami arrived unannounced and started climbing Yukishima’s untapped cliffs, the locals didn’t receive them well.

This short piece follows the two climbers as they explore an abundance of bulletproof rock and learn the importance of being good visitors.
