CO Residents: Get Your Free Solar Camp Cooker, Courtesy of Busch Light
To help prevent forest fires, the quintessential American brewery drops a solar-powered camp gear giveaway.
Wildfires continue to ravage the American west this summer, and Busch Light took a creative approach to limit fuel or wood burning in the backcountry. The beer brand is giving away folding, solar-powered slow cookers at several Colorado fire departments through Labor Day.
It calls the initiative “For the Forest” and dishes up a beer brat recipe, thanks to Top Chef alum Carrie Baird.
Space Blanket or Slow Cooker?
Even though the cooker looks more or less like a space blanket, it can heat up to 285 degrees, Busch Light said.
Made of “composite mirror cotton with a vacuum aluminizing sheet,” the cooker weighs less than a pound and folds down to a flat square about that stows in its tote.
Recent government data shows wildfires have quadrupled in size and tripled in frequency in the U.S. over the last 20 years. And humans, the same documents show, cause up to 89% of the increasingly severe blazes.
“The western U.S. has been hit especially hard, as four of the last five largest forest fires in Colorado have happened within the past five years,” Busch Light said in a statement. “That’s why a limited supply of Busch Light Solar Cookers will be available for FREE at fire departments throughout Colorado.”
The brand separately confirmed that it did not manufacture the cookers; it’s just handling distribution.
How does it work? To start, go to the For the Forest website and enter your birth date for access. After that, mash the “Claim Now” button. The remaining pickup dates include Aug. 26 in Nederland and Sept. 2 in Estes Park, per the site.
Once you get your slow cooker, you can try Baird’s beer brat recipe, also available on the website.
(Actually, that looks like a good idea whether or not you fire it up with the blanket-like device.)
To claim yours, sign up at the For the Forest promotion page for a chance to snag one for free at participating fire departments, now through Labor Day weekend:
- Red Feather Lakes (August 19)
- Nederland (August 26)
- Estes Park (September 2)
