BikeExchange Doles Out Free Mechanic Training to Bike Shops

BikeExchange is an online bicycle marketplace known for linking riders to bikes and gear they need through independent sellers, local shops, and anywhere else. Today, it introduces another perk to its platform.

While the company lives online, a new partnership with the Professional Bicycle Mechanics Association (PBMA) will ensure that its footprint will be noticeable in brick-and-mortar stores throughout the country — not just on the internet.

All new and existing North American BikeExchange members will receive a free one-year membership to the PBMA. And one person from each member shop will get free tuition to the association’s Bicycle Mechanic Certification program.

BikeExchange says the idea enhances the entire bicycle marketplace by helping consumers, mechanics, and dealers find and develop highly skilled mechanics to service bicycles sold in different ways.

Bikes are becoming more technical. Things like electronic components, e-bike batteries, and new suspension systems that should be expertly maintained and adjusted make wrenching on bikes much more challenging than it used to be.

The PBMA’s credentialing process gives dealers and independent mechanics a stamp of approval that riders can trust. Likewise, it gives mechanics the ability to market themselves to consumers in a more tangible way.

To recap: All North American BikeExchange members will receive a one-year membership into the PBMA for free starting this year. The membership usually costs $75 for individual mechanics, $150 for single stores, and $500 for bike shops with five or more locations.

Derek Colfer, North American CEO for BikeExchange, said the company is well aware of dealers’ significant role in consumer purchases — even those that happen online — and bike service when the time comes.

“The PBMA is the perfect organization to link with our dealers. It’s something we think all dealers should belong to because it ensures consistency and credibility for their shop and mechanics. It’s’ really a win-win for all sides, and we’re excited to have the opportunity to help everyone reap those benefits,” Colfer said.
